So I'm taking a class called Myth and Popular Culture--very cool stuff. It's basically about comparative mythology and literature, which has been a fascination of mine since high school. Well, now I'm writing a paper on the archetypes and kinds of myth present in one of my favorite novels of all time: The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice. But that's not what has me bouncing off the walls for pure joy.

I emailed the professor with my finalized topic on Saturday, and he sent me an email back last night saying "You're good to go, and by the way have you seen this?"

Anne Rice is writing another Vampire Chronicles novel! About Lestat! SQUEEEE!

When did you fall in love with ship number 5?
Before I even started reading--I saw the first episode of the TV show that was made from them, Blood Ties, before I read the first one.

3.What is your favorite moment of ship number 3?
Probably the hug at the end of "Memento Mori." But I'd have to watch Season 10 again to be sure.

4. What will the ship be if you take the boy from ship 2 and the girl from ship 1 and mesh them?
This is what I get for picking the ships before reading the questions--there is no girl in ship 1. So... John/Nicki? If that were even in character for John, he'd completely overwhelm Nicki. Unstable as Nicki was, he'd probably end up committing suicide, just like he did in the book.

5. Vise versa.
Lestat/Teyla... now that would be an interesting match!

6. What's your favorite moment for ship 4?
This is going to sound a little weird, but probably when Mara dies. I cried. I like it when stories make me cry.

7. How long was there between the time you got into the fandom and the time you started shipping ship number 3?
About nine years. I was a diehard Daniel/Sha'uri shipper until about halfway through S10.

8. When did you start shipping ship number 4?
A little ways into the New Jedi Order series. I wanted to see Luke get back together with Callista until then--I was kind of in denial when he proposed to Mara in Vision of the Future.

9. Take three people from three of the ships and create an OT3.
Hmm... How about Lestat/Teyla/Luke. Luke and Teyla have a lot in common, and as for Lestat, well, opposites attract? IDK--OT3s are most decidedly not my thing.

10. Rank your OTPs in order.
John/Teyla
Vicki/Henry
Luke/Mara
Daniel/Vala
Lestat/Nicki

To all of my real-life friends:

I know none of you will probably see this, seeing as even those of you who have LJs almost never use them, but I have to say this.

When I say, "We should get together and do something," when I say, "Call me when you have a free day," when I say, "Let's go to a movie, how's Monday for you?," when I say, "Drop me an email and we'll chat," I am not making small talk. I really do want to talk to you. I want to spend time with you. I know you're busy––I'm not, and that's why I'm leaving the time frame up to you. But please, for the love of all that's holy, CALL ME THE HELL BACK! Have you all just dropped off the face of the earth? I've called you, IMed you, sent you emails, and gotten NOTHING back. I have heard from NOBODY. ALL BLOODY SUMMER!!! Hello??? I'm starting to develop a complex here, people! Where are you?

Sigh.

Story of my life. The instant I try to get myself an actual social life is the instant all my friends suddenly become too busy to remember I fucking exist. Kinda makes one wonder, doesn't it? Brings me right back to eighth grade graduation––same thing happened. And I discovered that about 15 people I thought were my friends had just spent the past nine years humoring me.

I guess some things never change.

So my novel now has a (hopefully) interesting subplot. It started out as a short story featuring my main antagonist--essentially, how she became a vampire--but eventually just merged with QtR, adding another dimension to the story. I finally feel like it's more than a glorified high school melodrama.

And I just finished rewriting the outline from scratch. :D Thirty-five pages total--there's a lot of detail in it, even snippets of dialogue. I FINALLY have what I desperately hope is the final version of Quoth the Raven laid out completely. :D

All that's left to see, now, is how much I can finish by the end of the summer--if I think I'm going to get much done during the school year, I'm even more foolishly optimistic than I thought. My goal is to complete four to six chapters by September.

Queen of the Damned––Movie

<lj:music>"Not Meant For Me" from the QotD soundtrack</lj:music>

I've heard from some that the movie version of Queen of the Damned was pretty good, and from others that it was absolutely awful. Now, I absolutely adored the novel (right up there, in my opinion, with Blood Canticle and Memnoch the Devil), so I've been dying to see the movie for myself for quite some time.

I finally got my hands on a copy last night, and I'm still trying to decide whether or not I like it. It encompasses much of The Vampire Lestat as well as Queen of the Damned, and lot of things were changed from the novels. For example, in the novels, Lestat was made a vampire by one named Magnus, who promptly immolated himself without teaching Lestat much of anything about being a vampire. The beginning of the movie, on the other hand, smacks more of The Vampire Armand: Lestat was made by Marius, who spent (if I recall correctly) two full months teaching him how to be a vampire. I can understand why this was done; namely, time constraints. You just can't cram two Anne Rice novels into 100 minutes of film. So the two characters of Magnus and Marius were combined to simplify the story a bit (unfortunately, this cut out a lot of backstory that's really necessary to understand the characters of Lestat and Akasha––especially Akasha). Nothing is said in the movie about how Akasha became a vampire (thus how vampires came to be). Maharet's sister Mekare is missing entirely. Akasha's plan for world domination is extremely vague in the movie––her grand explanatio n to Lestat and his subsequent torment (torn between love of/loyalty to/fear of Akasha and horror and revulsion at her intentions) are missing. With Mekare absent, it was Maharet who finally killed Akasha––with no danger at all to the other vampires (in the novels, the lives of all vampires are entirely dependent on Akasha: she dies, they all die). Finally, no one becomes the vampire queen in Akasha's place. I find myself forced to compare it to 2001: A Space Odyssey: it doesn't make much sense if you haven't read the book. Unlike the Space Oddity, though, having read the book somewhat ruins the movie, precisely because of all the inconsistencies.

However, If you ignore said inconsistencies and draw on the novels only for the necessary background (and remain mentally flexible in doing so), the movie is pretty good on its own. Stuart Townshend certainly looked the part of Lestat more than Tom Cruise (except that Townshend has dark hair), but I liked Cruise's interpretation of the character better. I'm not arguing that Lestat isn't dark, moody, edgy, and utterly seductive––all of which Townshend pulled off quite well––but I never got as... gloomy an impression of him from the novels as I did from this movie. However, that's entirely a matter of artistic interpretation, and in the context of the film, it worked quite well. And the music of Lestat's band was very interesting––definitely not my usual style (I've never been much for Gothic rock), but I'm kind of hooked on the QotD soundtrack at the moment. :P And most importantly, the story worked. A touch forced in one or two places, perhaps, but most movie plots are. The general plot made sense, it was really just the specifics that threw me a bit.

Let me go back to Lestat for a moment. In Interview with the Vampire, both the movie and the novel, Lestat is clearly portrayed as a villain, pure evil––because that's how Louis sees him. In the four novels that follow (The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned, The Tale of the Body Thief, and Memnoch the Devil) plus the very last one, Blood Canticle––in other words, all the ones written from Lestat's point of view––something interesting is revealed. Lestat thinks he's evil. He thinks he wants to be evil (until Memnoch, anyway). He tries to be evil. But despite all this, he is not evil. That, I think, is what's so irresistably tragic about the character: he's so desperate to understand the world and his fate, and especially to be understood, when he has absolutely no understanding of himself.

I think that also may be what bothers me most about the movie version of Queen of the Damned. With the exception of a scene toward the very end when he makes Jesse a vampire to save her life (after obeying Akasha's order to kill her!), the Lestat of the film is undeniably evil. And that takes a lot away from the character.

So, my first impression of the movie is a little hazy. I suppose I'll have to watch it a few more times before I make up my mind.

I know I talked about it on GW a while back, so here's the thread with the concise version: Star Wars and Ancient Myth. I was talking about Anakin Skywalker here, but (and I'd have to watch all three Pirates films pretty much back-to-back-to-back to be sure) I'm fairly certain it can be applied to Will Turner as well. I'll do a more detailed analysis when I can get my hands on all three movies––I don't remember the first two terribly well. However, some of the end parts of the story are clearly present. We have his "sacred marriage" with the feminine principle (Elizabeth), and atonement with his father. We see "elixir theft" when he stabs the heart of Davey Jones, and apotheosis when he becomes captain of the Flying Dutchman.

The Goddess stuff was interesting, too, especially if you look at both Calypso and Elizabeth Swann in light of the hero story, as the archetypal feminine principle. Did anybody else notice that it was only after the Goddess Calypso was freed that Elizabeth really stepped into her role as Pirate "King"? And it was Elizabeth and Calypso, more than anyone else, who led the pirates to victory over Beckett and the EITC, who did not have this feminine power on their side––in other words, they rejected rather than embracing their feminine (i.e. nurturing, loving, caring, protecting, creative) attributes, and thus were not spiritually whole. Again, I'll be able to do a more detailed analysis when I can watch it more than once.

I also find it interesting that Turner was killed by a sword––a clearly phallic weapon, a symbol of masculinity and thus aggression––and revived when his heart was placed in a closed box: any closed container can be seen as a symbol of the womb of the Goddess, in this case in Her Preserver aspect.

Okay, now that I've bored you all to death with a partial mythological and psychological analysis of a Disney movie, I'll go away.

I realize the movie version of Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire is thirteen years old, but I just saw it for the first time last night.

A-MAZING. The movie was actually scarier than the novel, thanks mostly to the score (which was not John Williams, but quite good nonetheless. :p Yes, I'm biased). Anne Rice wrote the screenplay herself, so it was much more faithful to the original than most movies.

It has quite the star-studded cast, too: Brad Pitt as Louis, Tom Cruise as Lestat, Kirsten Dunst as Claudia, and Antonio Banderas as Armand, to name a few.

I have only one complaint about it, and it's a silly, shallow thing: two characters just did not look right at all. According to the novels, Armand was sixteen when he was made, and Antonio Banderas was definitely older than that. And Tom Cruise is not gorgeous enough by half to play Lestat––long blond hair just doesn't do it for him. Lestat is supposed to be a knockout, not "could've-been-sexy-if-only...". You know what I mean?

Oh, well. it was fairly easy to look past––the acting was very good all around.

On the other hand, I have evidently always pictured Louis and Claudia as looking like Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst, because they looked exactly as I've always imagined them. And Armand was just unbelievably creepy! Between him and Santiago, the whole Théâtre des Vampires bit gave me chills. (Perhaps a little too much gratuitous gore, though.) Louis made me want to cry, which surprised me: after reading the rest of the Vampire Chronicles, I was beginning to agree with Lestat––"Still whining, Louis?" He was seriously starting to get annoying. But in Interview, both the novel and the movie, you can understand him somewhat, and feel his pain.

All in all, it was an excellent movie. Even my sister, who rolls her eyes and just drips boredom the instant the words "Anne Rice," "Lestat," or "vampire" come out of my mouth, wants to see it. :)

...almost. :p I put down a deposit on my first car today, so I'm kind of excited. :D It's a 2005 Ford Taurus sedan with less than 30,000 miles on it, and it just had a tune-up, so it runs like a dream. It's kind of cute, too: it's a light tan sort of color (which the dealership calls "Dark Shadow Gray"), has a spoiler on the back, and has room for five passengers. It has a CD player, cruise control, power windows, tilt steering wheel... I can't wait to get in home! :D

Here's a picture:
